Paper wins big at awards

The Western Star - - NEWS -

THE Western Star team has shown it can keep up with the competition, picking up several prizes at this year’s Queensland Country Press Awards.

The awards ceremony, which was hosted in Brisbane last Friday, focused on advertising and journalistic excellence across 40 state newspapers.

The Western Star started strong, with a third placing in the open section for journalistic excellence.

Judge Peter Read said the paper had “a good story count on early pages, boosted by impressive briefs columns”.

Roma journalist Alexia Austin was awarded third in the individual journalist excellence category for her work on vegetation management.

Ms Austin was also recognised for her photography. In a field of 139 entries, she won a second and two third place awards for her sports, news and community photos.

The work of the The

Western Star advertising team was also recognised. The Country Carnivale

wrap was highly commended, as was the annual caricature cartoon calendar.

A highlight of the conference was a forum and panel discussion on issues and opportunities in regional Queensland.

Panel guests included the Leader of the Opposition Deb Frecklington, Federal Minister for Regional Development and Federal Member for Groom Dr John McVeigh.

The forum was mediated by NewsCorp general manager for Queensland and Northern Territory regionals Simon Irwin.

Topics covered included improving health and education services to attract professionals into the bush and encourage them to stay there, the need for innovation projects to reduce unemployment in the regions, decentralisation and the need for significant investment in both the state’s water and transport networks.
