Stepping up to boot cancer
Landers family honours amazing woman at Roma relay
FOR TALLIS Landers participating in Relay for Life this year will be a way to pay tribute to his late mother, Tracy Landers, who lost her battle with cancer last month.
Taking place at the Cities Rugby League Club on September 14, Relay for Life is a chance for the Roma community to recognise and celebrate local cancer survivors, patients and their carers, to honour and remember loved ones lost to cancer and to raise money to help save lives.
“After losing my mother to cancer this year, when we were approached by team captain Tori (Fleeting), my sister was very, very excited about getting behind it,” Mr Landers said.
“Our community has lost someone so having the opportunity to honour her in this way is something I know she’d be really proud of.
“My mother was one of 11 siblings and lost two of her siblings previously to cancer so it’s something that’s very close to heart for my family.
“We feel privileged as a family to have the opportunity to honour the family members we’ve lost.”
Team captain Tori Fleeting has jumped on board with a fundraising goal of $17,000 in this year’s theme of Give Cancer The Boot, with the event finishing at midnight to make it easier for families to participate.
“We all know someone who’s had cancer, whether you’ve been directly impacted or whether it’s your mother or friend,” she said.
“The day will have a big opening ceremony where the Landers family will speak and open the day and then there will be a candlelight ceremony for any cancer survivors which will be a really moving and special event.”
