Sidina is a rising star on the country tracks
HOLDING another shiny piece of hardware after race four at Mitchell, veteran horseman Neville Franz couldn’t be happier with his young filly, Sidina.
At only three years old and with three starts to her name, she’s as fresh as they come on the country tracks.
But after running first by a wide margin in Saturday’s Les Carter Memorial, she’s proven to her owner, and to trainer Craig Smith, that she will be going places in the industry.
“This was only her third start, and we thought she’d go well (at Mitchell),” Franz said.
“Our trainer told us she is just starting to come good, and will get over a lot more ground than what she covered today, considering this was her first attempt at 1200m.
“After today, we reckon she’ll get up to 1400m and 1600m.”
After buying her as a yearling from Eureka Stud, as one of six young racers, Franz had been “battling away” with Sidina before putting her under the traineeship of Roma’s Craig Smith, and together the pair have had a long history of success.
“A couple of years ago I was here and had some of my other horses racing with him, but they have retired now,” Franz said.
“Sidina is part of the next batch that are coming through with Craig, who at the moment is my go-to trainer, and hopefully we will have more success with him.
“He keeps telling me they will come good, and he knows best.”
Franz has worked with horses for most of his life, and has a keen eye for young, successful thoroughbreds.
After decades in the business, he had always thought his best horse was his first, but admits Sidina might just match up.
“I started off many years ago with a real good horse, but lost him after he snapped a leg at Eagle Farm,” Franz said.
“Ever since then I’ve been trying and trying, and have never had one anywhere near as good as him.
“But Sidina might just be the one.
“She’s only had a couple of littler starts after one small preparation, so she’s still got a fair bit of improvement, but I think if she does keep improving, she might be something in the future.”
Following Mitchell, trainer Craig Smith confirmed Sidina will have a few weeks off before her next race.
