ROMA SPRINTER ON THE UP
RACING: Out of a “fairly ordinary” run at Charleville on Cup Day, Roma-based trainer Craig Smith still managed to snag one victory with another of his stable’s new runners.
Edgeroi Mitzi ran only her third career race on Tuesday, tackling the 1100m QTIS Maiden Plate and securing her first win with a convincing margin of 1.3 lengths.
The four-year-old mare is coming into her own as a sprinter under the tutelage of Smith, who said he was happy with the progress she had been making.
“We have had her for about four months now and Charleville was only her second start for me,” Smith said.
“It has been a bit of a slow process but she is slowly maturing and learning the trade.
“She was still a bit green on Tuesday but I know she will improve with that run under her belt.
“She has already made really good improvement from her first start for me at Cunnamulla and I have put some blinkers on her so she has really jumped out of the ground now.”
While Mitzi herself is fairly green when it comes to racing, she has been expertly guided by veteran country jockey Shane McGovern.
“Shane has ridden her both times she’s started for me,” Smith said.
“He’s been around the ropes a fair bit and experienced jockeys like Shane are pretty good with young horses most times.
“It definitely helps.”
Moving forward, Smith is looking to give Mitzi a few more runs before the year is out, including Cup Day in Roma next week, where her performance will decide where she goes in the 2020 racing season.
“I think she will progress, and win a couple more,” Smith said.
“We will probably only give her one or two more starts this year and then give her a little spell, but I think she’ll come back a much better horse next time.
“(On Cup Day) she’ll start in the Class 1 of 1000m and, all going well, she can run at Roma on her home track.
“We will see how she goes next weekend and decide her future from there.”
NEW RUNNER: Daniel McGillivray and Ross Tilley of Smith Racing Stables with Edgeroi Mitzi, one of Smith’s early-career racehorses.
