PREVENTING hardship in a drought has been the aim of the touring Future Drought Fund team, which held a forum in Roma this week.

It was one of nearly 50 sessions on a program which crisscrosses the country, seeking input from different regions on how the government can better support farmers.

“One of the things that came up at Roma, and we have heard all over the place, is the importance of water management in times that are really critical, like we are now,” chairman of the Future Drought Fund consultative committee Brent Finlay said.

Once they are finished consulting face-to-face, Mr Finlay and his committee will be reviewing suggestions submitted the public, and he is encouraging all rural residents to have their say.

“This is really important – we want to hear from as many people as we can, whether they are farmers, or people who live in the towns,” he said.

“It is a rare opportunity to have input in to something that is being built, so please go on the Department of Agriculture website, look at the future drought plan, and send a submission to us.”
