THIS week on The Western
Star website, we shared an article about councillor Cameron O’Neil proposing a request for an agenda report into a potential grant scheme, which would bring more permanent residents back to Roma and surrounds.
Here’s what our readers had to say:
Ange Hammond: I feel there is pro’s and con’s to this scheme especially for people that don’t already live in the Roma Community is there enough work there to drive people to buy? Many other factors would also come into play as well.
Nancy Porter: Why just 4455? Why not include the small outer towns like Amby, Mitchell, Surat, Injune, Wallumbilla, Hodgson ? We are all part of the Maranoa and use Roma as their main base.
Cherilyn Bickers: I think personally this is a fantastic idea, it should have been done a long time ago though.
The only issue is, a lot of the people still renting in Roma don’t have the credit ratings to purchase a house even with the help of this potential scheme.
Maybe the council need to look further into the idea as a whole.
Possibly offering community information / financial planning sessions for people who need help with these sorts of things. i.e. buying a house, where do they start, what steps do they need to take.
It’s all well and good to offer a grant to buy a house, but only people with the smarts about this will really know how to go about it and apply for it.
How bout we go back to basics and start helping and educating people here in Roma already.
Once there’s a better basis in the town, the people will come back.
