Live export

The Western Star - - NEWS OPINION -

CAN you imagine how you’d feel if you were imprisoned inside a ship where the temperature was steadily rising – and rising and rising? Can you imagine how you’d feel being cooked alive?

Well, this week it was revealed that 2400 Australian sheep were cooked alive on the Awassi Express last August. On Channel Nine’s 60 Minutes program last night (8/4) we saw footage taken by a whistleblower aboard this vessel which showed sheep gasping for oxygen, noses flaring and smothered in faeces. Many were unable to lie down to rest or even reach food or water. Newborn lambs were trampled to death.

One cannot even begin to imagine the suffering that these pitiful animals would have endured before they finally succumbed to death.

If someone in Australia subjected a dog or cat to this suffering it would be regarded – and punished – as an animal cruelty offence. Yet our government, by allowing, supporting and encouraging live export, is subjecting millions of animals to this unimaginable suffering and getting away scot-free. — Jenny Moxham
