THE St George Bakery has proven that baking fine morsels is a piece of cake after taking out a number of awards at the Toowoomba Royal Baking Show.
Their vanilla slice and sponge cake took top gongs while their lamingtons came home in third place.
It was the first time Trent Challenger, who owns the bakery alongside wife Elizabeth, had entered a baking competition, choosing one of Australia’s biggest to make his mark.
“It’s a popular show and has stiff competition from a lot of the bakeries who take it pretty seriously,” he said.
The judges responded well to Trent’s cake-making abilities.
“They said the consistency of the custard in the vanilla slice is something they hadn’t seen before and it’s overall size was symmetrical.”
The judges also reserved special praise for the sponge cake, giving it top marks for its density and texture.
Trent says practice makes perfect when it comes to baking.
