A LUCKY

The Western Star - - RURAL WEEKLY -

save and close shave has given one of our woolliest creatures a new lease of life.

“Better” the overgrown sheep had lost his flock and was roaming solo in a reservoir in Greenvale, in Melbourne’s north.

The five-year-old dorset/merino cross had never been shorn in his life, rescuer Pam Ahern said.

When he was fleeced on Saturday, his wool weighed 10kg.

Ms Ahern, the founder and director of Edgar’s Mission animal sanctuary in Lancefield, said it took six men to lift the sheep.

She said things would have got a lot worse for “Better” had they not found him when they did.

“It was honestly in the nick of time,” she said.

“He was on his side and he was struggling.

“He couldn’t get up. If he had have stayed like that for the day, he would have died.”
