Burrumbuttock Hay Runners gear up for Quilpe trip

QUILPIE has been chosen as this year’s destination for the 15th annual Burrumbuttock Hay Run.

The convoy will visit Quilpie, Eulo and Thargomindah on the Australia Day weekend, from January 26–27.

“Quilpie is one of those little towns in the middle of nowhere that gets forgotten about,” Brendan Farrell, founder of Burrumbuttock Hay Runners, said.

“There are a lot of those sorts of towns in Queensland and New South Wales, and those are the places I try and help.

“We buy a lot of the produce from the local bakery and butcher shop to feed the 1000 odd people who tag along. “It’s a 1.5-day trip.

“We have to do a stop-over in Cunnamulla and rest there and then head out to Quilpie the next day.”

Mr Farrell did his first hay run after meeting a farmer from Bourke, New South Wales, who was doing it tough.

“He was struggling, his only income was his sheep and he was raising two kids,” Mr Farrell said.

“I ended up taking 22 trucks out to him that weekend.”

From that trip, the Burrumbuttock Hay Runners was born.

Mr Farrell has continued to organise a hay run to an area in need on the Australia Day weekend each year.

“It’s the thrill of giving and it’s helping the farmers in the Outback,” he said.

“They’re getting hay to their livestock, but also showing that someone still gives a s--t about them.”

Mr Farrell said everything for the Burrumbuttock Hay Run was donated, from the trucks, to the hay, and volunteers donating their time.

“We have to raise anywhere from $700,000 to $1 million each year,” he said.

“The more that’s donated, the more trucks we can get on the road to help the farmers.

“We have loyal people that have done all 14 runs.

“We have some mechanics that are doing their seventh run, first aid officers doing their 10th run.

“No one is getting paid for it, we just do it because we can.”

Helping farmers is an issue close to Mr Farrell’s heart as he is a farmer.

“I have two farms myself, and I’m a truck driver,” he said.

“I have cattle and crops. “I donate a bit of hay every year as well.”
