A spotter’s guide to Carl Cox

-

Is it true the world-famous techno producer lives in Frankston?

Carl Cox is as much a regular in Ibiza as he is in Melbourne’s techno and house clubs. This year, the 53-year-old British DJ and producer is gearing up to host Pure – a day-long house and techno festival being held on the ANZAC Day long weekend. The impressive line-up includes up-and-coming local DJS as well as big-name internationals, including Italy’s Joseph Capriati and German stalwart Format:b. Even if you’ve seen him live plenty of times, there are plenty of things you might not know about Cox, such as:

01 HE LIVES IN FRANKSTON

Did you ever wonder why Cox plays in Melbourne so often? On his first Australian tour in 1988, he fell in love with the country and finally made the move to Melbourne almost ten years ago. Having lived near Brighton in the UK, he felt a connection to the seaside, which explains his affinity to Frankston’s bay area. The DJ now tries to spend his downtime here for the Australian summers.

02 HIS VINYL COLLECTION IS INSANE

No surprises here, but Cox has more than 150,000 records organised in chronological order. He keeps them all in a garage in his Frankston abode.

03 HE STARTED WORKING AS A DJ IN HIS TEENS

Before he was a world-class DJ, Carl Cox was spinning tunes at his own parties and small pub gigs when he was 17 years old.

04 HE IS QUITE THE REV HEAD

He’s really into vintage racing cars and has a collection of 60 motorbikes split between Australia and the UK. He loves racing so much that he’s started a company called Carl Cox Motorsport that has supported a number of racing teams.

05 HIS IBIZA RESIDENCY LASTED FOR 15 YEARS

People have come from all around the world to see Cox play at his residency in Ibiza club Space, which is finally wrapping up this year. DS
