Fifty years ago the Na­tional Gallery of Vic­to­ria opened its St Kilda Road build­ing with a con­tentious ex­hi­bi­tion. The Field fea­tured 40 emerg­ing Aus­tralian artists work­ing at the cut­ting edge of con­tem­po­rary art. To cel­e­brate its an­niver­sary, the NGV has recre­ated this ex­hi­bi­tion fea­tur­ing the work of Sydney Ball, Peter Booth and Janet Dawson. THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME

Bux­ton Con­tem­po­rary is Mel­bourne’s new­est ma­jor gallery, de­signed by the ar­chi­tects be­hind Ho­bart’s MONA and show­cas­ing prop­erty mogul Michael Bux­ton’s col­lec­tion. MYURAN SUKUMARAN: AN­OTHER DAY IN PAR­ADISE

This deeply af­fect­ing ex­hi­bi­tion shows ex­tra­or­di­nary paint­ings cre­ated by the con­victed drug smug­gler dur­ing his in­car­cer­a­tion at Bali’s Ker­obokan Prison and in the fi­nal 72 hours be­fore his ex­e­cu­tion.
