AUTUMN ART
SIDNEY NOLAN: NED KELLY
Few images from Australian art history are as famous as Nolan’s paintings depicting Ned Kelly and the Kelly Gang. Nolan completed them over 12 months in 1946 and 1947 at Heide, Sunday and John Reed’s Bulleen house. Here he created one of the most recognisable images in Australian art: Kelly’s helmet, rendered as a simple black box with a slit cut out for vision. The National Gallery of Australia holds 26 of the 27 paintings in the series and is sending them on the road, with Geelong the only stop in Kelly’s home state. àgeelong Gallery, 55 Little Malop St, Geelong 3220. 03 5229 3645. geelonggallery.org.au. Daily 10am-5pm. $6-$11. Mar 2-May 26.
TRACEY MOFFATT: BODY REMEMBERS
In 2017, Tracey Moffatt was Australia’s representative at the Venice Biennale, showing both a photo series and film that feature in this exhibition. True to Moffatt’s style, they’re both confronting works: ‘Body Remembers’ is ten ochre-hued photographs depicting Moffatt as a 1950s maid in a variety of settings, while ‘Vigil’ is a film montage that juxtaposes footage of an asylum seeker boat capsizing off Christmas Island with classic images from Hollywood film. àtarrawarra Museum of Art, 313 Healesville-yarra Glen Rd, Healesville 3777. 03 5957 3100. www.tmwa.com.au. SO-IL: VIEWING CHINA
The last few years at the NGV have been all about innovative, immersive exhibition spaces that allow visitors to see artworks in a different light. This free exhibition extends that philosophy, showing 50 white porcelain items from the NGV Collection inside a brightly coloured architectural display by SO-IL, an architectural design firm headed by Chinese-american architect Jing Liu and Dutchman Florian Idenburg.
