Time Out (Sydney)

The Kite String Tangle x Dustin Tebbutt

-

Time Out plays a game of this-or-that with Danny and Dustin to discover whether their similarities extend past creating beautiful, atmospheric pop music. By Jordan Kretchmer

The Kite String Tangle (aka Danny Harley) has spent the past two years touring off the back of his debut single ‘Given the Chance'. Dustin Tebbutt's first single ‘The Breach', meanwhile, garnered him comparisons to no less than Bon Iver and Sigur Rós. Now the solo artists – who both gained initial exposure through Triple J's Unearthed – have joined forces to produce an EP led by first single ‘Illuminate'. To complement its release the boys are heading out on tour. Time Out fired some questions at them to see what else they do (or don't) have in common...

Guys, the Rolling Stones or the Beatles? Dustin The Beatles. Danny The Beatles, all the way. I grew up with every album of theirs playing in rotation. My family is [also] from Liverpool, and it was pretty hard to get away from. No complaints, though.

Morning or night? Dustin Creatively, late nights are golden for me... it's when my brain switches on. But life-wise, I actually prefer the early morning. Danny Night time is the right time. Especially for music.

Winter or summer? Dustin Winter for sure. Cold mornings and coffee just make sense to me. Danny Winter is so much better for me. I live in Brisbane and I have a bunch of cool jackets that I like but I never get to wear them. Intimate gig or festival? Dustin I'd have to say I prefer to see or play a show at a smaller venue. It's probably got a lot to do with the style of music I'm making, but there's more control over the small details that can really take a show to the next level. Danny I think more people stumble across you and turn into a fan at a festival but you can have a more intimate experience at a [smaller] gig.

Wine or beer? Dustin Wine. Danny Wine is my vice. I drink red wine every night.

Guitar or piano? Dustin Guitar is where I feel most comfortable – I'm a hack on the keys – but I really like writing on the piano. I'm not informed enough to be conscious of the chords or notes I'm playing, so it feels more direct and inspired. Danny I am way more proficient at guitar. However, I find piano to be more creative.

Introvert or extrovert? Dustin I'm an extrovert on the inside... Danny It's weird, sometimes I'll be the loudest guy at the party and then I won't leave the house for weeks.

Jazz or classical? Dustin Classical at the moment, I've been listening to a fair bit of Max Richter after I saw him at the Opera House earlier in the year. His stuff is incredible. Danny Jazz all the way. Wes Montgomery is my favourite.
