IF PARRAMATTA WERE a capital city it would be the fourth largest in Australia. This year’s population estimate is 236,272, and it is forecasted to grow to 397,339 by 2036. The first people to live in the area were the Burramatta clan of the Darug people. ‘Burra’ means eel and the importance of the eel to the first people has continued to the naming of places, sports teams and festivals in Parramatta today. Everywhere you look in Parramatta there is another development to the skyline. However, if you’re planning to up sticks and move to Sydney’s geographical centre you may be too late: the average house price is over a million bucks – and demand isn’t slowing. To cope with the extra bodies, the NSW Government is proposing a Parramatta Light Rail to begin operation in late 2017.
