Snorkelling in Sydney

If you’d rather look at fish than catch them...

-

BARE ISLAND

Weave your way along the rock ledges of this historic peninsula and you could encounter sand rays, nudibranchs (a shell-less sea snail), colourful sponge life, and maybe even a turtle. Anzac Pde, La Perouse 2036.

WATTAMOLLA BEACH

Experienced fish-spotters can jump in from the rocky headlands, while more casual snorkel-sporters slink into the lagoon at this secluded spot. You may sight more human legs than fish on a busy day, so get in early. Royal National Park, Sutherland Shire 2232.

LITTLE BAY BEACH

It may only be small, but its snorkelling opportunities are mighty. Bring your goggles and flippers to these calm rock pools and sea ledges when you want to gaze at schools of sprightly fish and colourful sea urchins. 4R Coast Hospital Rd,

Little Bay 2036.

THE BASIN

It’s rumoured that Sydney snorkelers can spot alien-like seahorses here, but even if you don’t see any of these dainty creatures, there are plenty of cuttlefish, leatherjackets and rays, plus tropical species during the summer. The Basin Trail, Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park 2084. $12 per vehicle per day.
