Mercedes A250 AMG Line
This, in theory, is the latest A-Class in mild hot hatch form. Its 2.0-litre turbo petrol has 221bhp, not far off an entry-level Golf GTI.
There’s lots of nice interior chintz but the basics feel cheap – its gearselector and handbrake in particular. It comes only with a 7spd auto. It’s not especially sharp, and the engine’s no fun to rev. But it's quick and surprisingly
It rides too firmly to be a comfy family car, but the handling’s not good enough to properly rival a GTI. A missed opportunity.
