Here’s one to ruf­fle feath­ers. Chevro­let re­vealed a 9.0secs drag Ca­maro at the SEMA show in Ve­gas… and it’s elec­tric. The mo­tors and bat­ter­ies alla link up to ex­ist­ing Ca­maro driv­e­train parts, so you could slot all of it into any GM car. A crate EV con­ver­sion if you will.

As a drag car, it makes per­fect sense – elec­tric pow­er­trains pro­vide in­stant and (of­ten) hu­mon­gous torque, with sledge­ham­mer ac­cel­er­a­tion that no com­par­a­tive petrol car can hope to match. Tesla sa­loons beat Fer­rari sports cars.

Thus as a way to pro­pel nearly two tonnes of metal down a quar­ter-mile strip as quickly as pos­si­ble, it’s ideal. Meet the Ca­maro eCOPO, then, riff­ing off the name of drag spe­cial Chevy mus­cle cars past. Chevy has part­nered with Han­cock and Lane Rac­ing, who did the Shock and Awe elec­tric drag racer, which got into the low eights.

This Ca­maro won’t be that quick, but with 700bhp it should be in the nines. Also it opens the door for end­less petrol to ’leccy con­ver­sions. Sacri­lege or su­perb? You de­cide.
