TIRED OF FUEL STATIONS? THE ‘CRATE’ EV UNIT IS HERE...

- SD

Here’s one to ruffle feathers. Chevrolet revealed a 9.0secs drag Camaro at the SEMA show in Vegas… and it’s electric. The motors and batteries alla link up to existing Camaro drivetrain parts, so you could slot all of it into any GM car. A crate EV conversion if you will.

As a drag car, it makes perfect sense – electric powertrains provide instant and (often) humongous torque, with sledgehammer acceleration that no comparative petrol car can hope to match. Tesla saloons beat Ferrari sports cars.

Thus as a way to propel nearly two tonnes of metal down a quarter-mile strip as quickly as possible, it’s ideal. Meet the Camaro eCOPO, then, riffing off the name of drag special Chevy muscle cars past. Chevy has partnered with Hancock and Lane Racing, who did the Shock and Awe electric drag racer, which got into the low eights.

This Camaro won’t be that quick, but with 700bhp it should be in the nines. Also it opens the door for endless petrol to ’leccy conversions. Sacrilege or superb? You decide.
