Porsche 911 Carrera T by Litchfield £10,339 plus donor car

WE SAY: WANT TO GIVE YOUR 911 A BIT MORE BITE? HERE’S HOW

Spotted the dropped ride height, did you? Think you need to get out more. This Porsche 911 Carrera T has been dropped 20mm at the front and 10mm at the rear as part of a package of upgrades designed to make it the best road-going 911 available – i.e. this side of a hardcore GT3.

It’s been done by Litchfield, a UK tuning firm that has impressed us before with upgrades to cars as diverse as the Audi RS6 and Subaru BRZ. The Carrera T is already a lightweight, driver-focused version of the standard 911 with no more power (365bhp), but 20kg lighter with reduced sound deadening, fabric door pulls, no rear seats, plus a sports exhaust and PASM suspension.

Litchfield has used the T as the starting point, then fitted stiffer springs, 7mm spacers to enhance the track width and a solid bush on the front lower suspension arm, which not only helps steering precision, but also adjusts the caster angle, helping to keep the wheel flatter on the road as the suspension moves.

It now goes down a road more positively, and you get more feedback, a more detailed feel for the tarmac. As ever in a 911, the biggest bar to cruising comfort is tyre roar, but at least here you’re getting the info to go with it. And not just through the seat of your pants, but the steering, which has lost any slack it had and introduced a bit of writhe. Taut and agile, handling is a delight.

Meanwhile, the engine now wears a new exhaust system including catalytic converters, and a modified ECU. These small tweaks have liberated an extra 115bhp and 128lb ft of torque from the twin-turbo flat-six. Obviously this makes the Carrera T substantially faster, but it’s the drivability that has really gained – the motor now picks up significantly sooner and more vigorously. At 2,400rpm it simply takes off. Goodbye, adios, au revoir to whatever was in the mirrors. No apparent effort, just a good hiss of turbo and all those behind are seeing is a squatting rump.

Bored of your 911 Carrera? You know who to call…
