Top Gear (UK) - - WELCOME - Charlie Turner EDITOR-IN-CHIEF @TopGearEditor / edi[email protected]topgearmagazine.com

If you’re one of our valued subscribers, this issue should have landed on your doorstep just in time to serve as a welcome distraction from the looming chaos of Christmas. Whatever form that takes in your neck of the woods, we hope this magazine provides some solace from the onslaught of random relatives and sprouts. For those of you buying at the news stand, congratulations, you survived, and it’s time to start dreaming about what adventures lie ahead in 2019.

At TopGear we firmly believe the magazine should provide a healthy dose of escapism on a monthly basis and help you dream a little. So to help make 2019 a little brighter, we have applied some TopGear maths and lateral thinking to the car-buying process. While other magazines will helpfully tell you how to PCP yourself into a midrange MPV, we like to look at things a little differently... a little more ambitiously. Do you really want that new R8 when for the same amount of cash (or monthly payment) you could have a Lamborghini Murciélago as your daily driver? OK, so we may have taken that one a little too far, but apply the logic further down the food chain and things get interesting. Would you prefer a new diesel BMW 3-Series or a V8 M5? A new Alpine A110 or a pre-loved Porsche 911? A spanking new Evoque or a full-fat Range Rover? See what I mean?

There’s method to our madness, of course, not only does TopGear maths give you a more exciting daily driver, but choose wisely and where modern cars will depreciate steeply, more ambitious secondhand superheroes come with the potential of actually making money as your future classic appreciates.* If nothing else, our cover story hopefully helps kick off another year of planning and plotting on planet car.

Elsewhere in the issue, we head to the Italian Alps in the stunning Italdesign Zerouno, spend a race weekend with the 21-year-old looking to win Ferrari’s first F1 title in over a decade, head to the Bahraini oilfields in the search of enlightenment, and try and – spoiler alert – fail to ascend the three highest paved roads in Europe, in the process proving that sometimes life is more about the journey than the destination.

Wherever your journey takes you this year, on behalf of the whole team here at TopGear, thank you for your continued support. May the road rise to meet you.

Enjoy the issue.
