POINT BREAK | 10 things we know about the remake of Kathryn Bigelow’s crime/surf action classic…

- JMc

It'll be true to the original

“The original Point Break is amazing,” says director Ericson Core. “We held onto the theme – an undercover agent going after these people. There’s a few moments in the film that are homages to the first movie.”

There’s more stor y

“The original was about a group of guys robbing banks for an endless summer,” explains Core. “We wanted to expand it beyond that and work with extreme athletes and also talk about their relationship to nature.”

It’s a Robin Hod ta le

“Whether they’re criminals or not is for the audience to decide,” adds the director. “But they’re trying to be a little bit more Robin Hood, trying to protect things more than anything.”

Pro duction spanne d the globe

According to Core, Point Break 2016 was shot in 10 countries. “The athletes were really the ones who led us to the most incredible places on earth and cast the film along with me.”

Things get extreme

Big-wave surfing? Check. Wingsuit flying? Yup. Sheer-face snowboarding? You bet. Free rock-climbing? Most def. High-speed motorcycling? Oh yes!

“Ericson didn’t want it to be CGI,” says wingsuit pilot Jeb Corliss. “He wanted to take the best action sports athletes from each discipline and unleash them on the world to show what can be done.”

Johnny Uta h lives the dream

“I grew up a surfer on the beaches of Sydney,” says Luke Bracey. “Point Break was a seminal film in my life. I can’t believe I’m in the movie. I can’t believe I’m Johnny Utah.”

Limits were pushed

“Not only did we do authentic wingsuiting, but it was something that wasn’t done before,” says Corliss with not a little pride. “That was a sequence that took about six weeks, about sixty jumps [ per person].”

Action informs the stor y

“The wingsuiting is also a very important part of the emotional journey of the film with Utah reaching his apex of experience,” remarks Core. “It’s definitely woven in. It’s not just cutaways to action scenes at all.”

Sequels are possible

Bracey says he’s more than ready for a sequel. “If we can find a place for Johnny Utah to go after this, I’d love to explore that. Maybe we’ll make eight of them. Who knows?”
