My movie life

The films that upset, inspire and rile up actor

- Seth Rogen

THE FIRST MOVIE I EVER SAW

The first movie I ever saw? I have no idea. Probably animated movies.

THE LAND BEFORE TIME or some shit like that. I think that there are movies my parents had on VHS that I would watch over and over and over and over again, like Back To The

Future, that was one I remember watching a ton. And I watched Ghostbusters a lot. And I watched

¡Three Amigos! a lot. I rewatch those movies. If they’re on, I have a hard time turning them off.

THE FILM I LOVE THAT NOBODY’S HEARD OF

It’s not that obscure, but a lot of people haven’t seen it – THE LAST

DET AIL. It’s a Hal Ashby movie that stars Jack Nicholson, that Robert Towne wrote. It’s one of my favourite movies of all time. It’s awesome. I love Hal Ashby’s movies in general. We actually wrote Superbad before we saw it, but then when we saw it, it was like, ‘Oh, we’re ripping off this movie.’ We’d never even seen it, and we somehow were ripping it off.

THE FILM THAT ALWAYS MAKES ME CRY

Those Pixar movies are good at emotionally manipulating people.

UP – the beginning of Up, there’s no way not to cry, I think. Toy Story 2 and 3 both have parts that will make you cry every time. No one makes you cry more than cartoons, though. Or any movie where a dog dies, I’ll cry. I cry pretty easily at movies [ laughs]. I haven’t watched

Inside Out yet because I know how much I’m going to cry.

THE FILM THAT SCARES ME THE MOST

Horror movies are scary in general. But I like horror movies. Oddly, the first PARANORMAL ACTIVITY movie scared the shit out of me. It blew me away. We watched it thinking it was going to be stupid, like, ‘This movie’s made a lot of money, but is it actually scary?’ We were in a trailer, making a movie. Broad daylight. There were five of us scared shitless watching it. It really impressed me. I thought it was a very smart movie.

MY DESERT ISLAND MOVIE

I think it’s probably THE BIG

LEBOWS KI. It has a huge amount of replay value. It just makes me happy. You know what’s funny? I didn’t actually love the movie the first time I saw it. I didn’t quite get it. I also was in high school when it came out. I remember just being confused by it. Then I rewatched it a few years later. I was like, ‘Oh my God, it’s the fucking greatest movie of all time.’ It just snapped into place all of a sudden.

THE LAST FILM I SAW ON A PLANE

I watched TERMINATOR GENISYS this morning. I’m only halfway through! [ laughs] I’ll let you know [ how it was] when I get back to Atlanta. It all depends on if I’m trying to stay awake. I was trying to sleep on this plane, so I put on Terminator

Genisys which I was not that excited to see. But Inside Out I might save for the way back, which I’m staying awake for. [ laughs] MM
