My Comedy Past I did a thing with Martin Freeman and Olivia Coleman years ago called Confetti, an entirely improvised film – to the extent that the catering was improvised. Debbie Isitt, the director, let us do what we wanted. She was like the fun teacher where I’m not sure whether a slightly stricter teacher could have got better results, but we had a bloody good laugh.
My Most Surprising Comedian
I got to work with Martin Freeman, and I can attest to the fact he is hilarious. He’s a really funny bloke, as well as being brilliant. And Hugh Grant is one of the funniest men I’ve met who isn’t a stand up. He’s never done stand up, but he should. He’s brilliantly comedically gifted. Just in conversation, he’s just a really funny guy. Great at telling stories. The Movie That Makes Me Cry With Laughter Team America: World Police. It’s just so brilliant. Nothing the matter with that movie. I love the scene when he says, “You may get caught. You may need to take your own life. Here, take this.” You think he’s going to pass across some pills or cyanide, but he gives him a hammer with blood and hair all over it. It’s just brutal.
My Un derrated Comedy Performer
There are a couple of bits in True
Roma nce, probably my favourite movie of all time, which I think are very comedic. It depends on how you read them. The Brad Pitt character in True Romance, that’s underrated comic genius. He just throws it away. He’s almost not there. And it’s Brad Pitt. Just brilliantly funny, gets me laughing.
MY FAVOURITE FUNNY MOVIE I suppose the perfect comedy movie is Life Of Brian. That’s the best. Every detail of it. I read Michael Palin’s diaries and then went back and watched it again. You sort of realise, it’s just 12 brilliant sketches in a row but the storyline is very familiar and you kind of know what the tropes are in that style of movie, so you can just sit back and enjoy it.
My Favourite Current Comedy Performer
I think Kevin Hart is just an incredible star. In every movie that he’s ever in, he’s so watchable and funny and light.
The Wedding Ringer is such a great little comedy movie. The
Ride Along movies are really good. He’s the full package.
