huge in Japan and a cult favourite here, the Yakuza series hasn’t changed much since its 2005 debut, revisited here. The story follows the events of January’s ’80s-set prequel, as well-tailored gangster-with-aconscience Kazuma Kiryu returns from prison to find Tokyo’s Tojo Clan in disarray, and a former friend at the heart of it. Blending tragedy with violence, comedy with sentimentality, it’s an odd but distinctive mix. Battling lippy thugs in rain-lashed alleys has rarely been so guiltily satisfying. CS
