Just say Noé, kids…

Based, loosely one sus­pects, on the true story of a ’90s dance troupe who had their punch spiked with LSD, this lat­est provo­ca­tion from Ar­gen­tinian di­rec­tor Gas­par Noé (Ir­re­versible, En­ter The Void) goes from the san­gria to the sa­tanic in the blink of a blood­shot eye.

It opens with a se­ries of taped au­di­tions fol­lowed by an ex­tended – and ex­hil­a­rat­ing – re­hearsal. The punch is then slurped… and Noé goes to work. Di­alling the bass rum­bles up to 11, he lets his un­teth­ered cam­era glide down night­mar­ish cor­ri­dors and crawl along sweat-drip­ping ceil­ings. Next, the lens coils over, un­der and around the off-their-tits Parisian troupe as they buck, fuck and ruck to death. Well, what did you ex­pect with that ti­tle? Mind you, the way Noé keeps up the tech­ni­cal daz­zle and struc­tural dar­ing, this is re­ally more of a tantric or­gasm.

Af­ter the au­teur’s limp Love (2015), Cli­max is pumped with Vi­a­gra from its throb­bing tem­ples to its twitch­ing toes. Its cast of pro­fes­sional dancers (in­clud­ing Sofia Boutella) re­sem­ble a Bosch paint­ing brought to pain-wracked life as vin­tage techno, house and elec­tronic mu­sic sound­track their ac­cursed con­tor­tions. Imag­ine Di­ver­sity, with added edge, reen­act­ing Pa­solini’s Salò, with less poo-eat­ing. How can you re­sist? Jamie Gra­ham


Divine be­ings plum­met to hell in Noé’s as­ton­ish­ing mu­si­cal (of sorts). Not so much Mamma Mia! as “Mother of God!!”
