Two sequels, a remake, a TV spin-off… Not bad for the one-time ‘video nasty’. Sure, this shocker remains disquieting (the ‘tree rape’ sequence is rightly notorious) but the infamy doesn’t convey Raimi’s unhinged exuberance and invention. With hurtling camerawork, shrieking sound design and gross-out FX, the funhouse atmosphere borders on outright, albeit pitch-black, comedy.
