OCEAN’S 8

Despite the star wattage of its leads, Gary Ross’ breezy relaunch of the Ocean’s series is more enjoyable diversion than full-on dazzler. It’s put together with Soderberghian slickness, while there are standout turns from Helena Bonham Carter as a disgraced fashion designer and Anne Hathaway, a hoot as the preening starlet whose diamond necklace is the target. But the heist goes a little too smoothly: fun though it is to watch the pieces fall into place, it lacks the nail-gnawing tension of a vintage caper. Chris Schilling
