DEAD SOULS
OUT 30 NOVEMBER
Over 12 years, documentarian Wang Bing located and interviewed survivors of China’s labour camps, where Communist Party dissenters were sent to be “politically rehabilitated” – which often meant starving to death. At eight hours plus change, this painstaking doc is sprawling yet intimate, as he respectfully lets his subjects unburden themselves without interruption. A gruelling but vital work. Chris Schilling
