TIDES

The micro-budgeted debut feature of British writer/director Tupaq Felber, this low-key character study unfolds principally on a Surrey canal boat hired by four fortysomething friends. Among the group, Jon (Jon Foster) is struggling to come to terms with a bereavement. Shot in handsome monochrome, Tides moves at a gentle pace, yet offers a credibly acted portrait of middle-aged friendship. Tom Dawson
