DOWN A DARK HALL 18

Worse things than possessive ghosts await in this low-gothic take on Lois Duncan’s 1974 YA novel, set in a boarding school for troubled but talented teens. Yes, Uma Thurman unleashes the rubbish French accent that time forgot as a toxic headmistress, smirking over her mysterious works. Rodrigo (Buried) Cortés’ heavily stylised direction and AnnaSophia Robb’s engaged lead can’t save the result from falling between halls: too daft to scare, too self-serious for campy fun, its effects dissipate like fog.
