Terrence Malick’s magnum opus gets even opus-er with this hefty Criterion release, which adds 50 minutes of fresh footage (nudging the run time past three hours). Character arcs are strengthened (Sean Penn gets slightly more to do); a tornado wreaks havoc in ’50s Waco; and Brad Pitt cracks a dad joke. Extras are substantial, too: there’s a deep dive into the experimental FX behind the celebrated ‘creation’ sequence (be warned, it does mute some of the mystery), a lengthy chat with Jessica Chastain, and a previously released documentary featuring David Fincher and Christopher Nolan.
