Based on Clive Barker’s Liverpoolset story The Forbidden, Bernard Rose’s adap buzzes with ideas and iconography as it transposes the action to the housing projects of Chicago. The fantasy is freighted with racial and social subtext, as university researcher Helen (Virginia Madsen) investigates the urban legend of the titular murdered slave (Tony Todd), who supposedly appears to wreak hookhanded vengeance if you say his name five times… One of the best horrors of the fallow ’90s, here given a honeypot of extras.
