UNTITLED TERMINATOR REBOOT

The killer cyborg is making a comeback

-

Director Tim Miller Starring Mackenzie Davis, Linda Hamilton, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Gabriel Luna, Natalia Reyes, Diego Boneta

He always said he’d be back – though after the lacklustre performance of Terminator Genisys, you could be forgiven for thinking we’d seen the last of cinema’s favourite indestructible automaton. Turns out you can’t keep a good cyborg down, though, and with original creator James Cameron back as producer, it’s been decided the sixth film in the franchise will ignore everything that’s happened since Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

“We’re pretending the other films were a bad dream,” joked Cameron last year, adding that the new instalment would be “a return to [the] form that I believe fans of the franchise have been wanting”. Arnold Schwarzenegger will be back, of course, playing not just the T-800 but also (it’s rumoured) the human from which said cyborg’s likeness was lifted. The big comeback, though, is that of Linda Hamilton, reprising her iconic role as Sarah Connor for what is likely to be a farewell appearance. Rumour also has it the teenage John Connor will make a comeback in CG form with Edward Furlong’s face grafted onto a stand-in’s for story catch-up purposes.

It won’t all be old favourites, though. In keeping with Cameron’s wish to “reinvent the series for the 21st Century”, a fresh generation of freedom fighters will be thrown into the mix, led by Colombian Natalia Reyes playing a young woman from Mexico City who gets caught up in the human-machine conflict. David S. Goyer’s script also introduces Mackenzie Davis (Tully), whose Grace character may be a Kyle Reese-style agent from the future, with a few mechanical upgrades.

There’s a new Terminator, as well, played by Gabriel Luna from Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., plus a new director in Tim Deadpool Miller. “I think it is a special addition to a long franchise that deserves another chapter,” insists Davis, who vows it won’t be “just two-anda-half hours of action and clanging metal…” NS untitled terminator reboot opens on 31 october.
