THE NEW MUTANTS
A new breed of X-Men are (finally) emerging…
Director Josh Boone Starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Charlie Heaton, Henry Zaga, Blu Hunt
“It being delayed is disappointing,” admitted Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) earlier this year. “Frustrating in fact.” We completely commiserate. Much-delayed despite its batshit trailer scaring up favourable buzz over a year ago, The New Mutants originally wrapped in autumn 2017, but it’s spent 16 months in post-production oblivion. Why? According to reports, 20th Century Fox requested “massive” reshoots, asking director Josh Boone to rework more than half of the footage.
The good news? Those reshoots came off the back of overwhelmingly positive early test screenings, with Fox reportedly keen to make the film more intense. And scarier. That can only be a positive considering its premise, which sees hospitalised mutants Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Charlie Heaton, Henry Zaga and Blu Hunt attempting to break free from their incarceration. Boone himself has remained silent on the matter, but if he can deliver on the promise of that gnarly early trailer, with its murky, playful
A Nightmare On Elm Street 3 vibe, we could – finally – be in for a treat when the new mutants bust out of their prison.
“It’s definitely more important to make sure we get it right than rushing to make a date,” adds Taylor-Joy. Fine, we’ll wait. JW the New Mutants opens on 2 august.
