Five Point Fix
1
Keep costs down. If the mid-price market is squeezed and romcoms struggle overseas, budget smartly.
2
Diversify. Black, Asian, gay and grey (see Mamma
Mia!) romcoms are performing solidly. 3
Sharpen the scripts. Reference classic screwball fare, perhaps, not some Kutcher/Heigl horror-show.
4
Stamp out the sexism. Even fond nostalgia would wince if confronted with She’s All That or The Ugly Truth.
5
Find that new genre auteur. Not a new Ephron (as if!), but someone with a sassy, snappy, love-savvy voice.
