rson Welles’ Othello was filmed in fragments between 1948 and 1951. Individual scenes were sometimes shot across two or three countries. Desdemona was played by a trio of actresses. And yet Welles’ scrappy indie won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 1952, and pips Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet – to say nothing of Welles’ own Macbeth and Chimes At Midnight – as the the most visually striking Shakespeare adpated for the screen. Whether modern viewers are able to accept Welles playing the Moor in blackface is another matter… Jamie Graham
