NINA
OUT TBC
Polish couple Nina (Julia Kijowska) and Wojtek (Andrzej Konopka) can’t have kids and can’t find a surrogate – until a car accident introduces them to Magda (Eliza Rycembel). In attempting to persuade her to carry their baby, Nina discovers that a) Magda is a lesbian and b) so is she. Director Olga Chajdas’s feature debut is a passionate but unsatisfying addition to recent LGBT cinema, crippled by its overly contrived premise. Motivations are vague – there’s no good reason why Magda shouldn’t run a mile from the morose title character – and the plot lacks both urgency and intrigue. Simon Kinnear
