ELISABETH BRINGS THE HOUSE DOWN…

-

HER SMELL TBC film OUT 9 September Digital HD

Sharing some of its DNA with Vox Lux, Her Smell (even having seen it, you’ll be none the wiser why it’s entitled thus) charts the rise and fall of Becky Something (Elisabeth Moss). The lead singer of ’90s punk girl band Something She, she’s a narcissistic black hole whose genius and drama is equally attractive and destructive.

Told through five different episodes over a decade – from the highs of peak performance to the lows of on-stage

wipeouts – Alex Ross Perry’s (Listen Up Philip, Queen Of Earth) film is refreshing, annoying and ultimately haunting. The writer/director casts an unflinching eye on the dynamics of female friendship, the demands of creativity, addiction, the patience of those orbiting a user and the frailty of fame. And all the above are captured via real-time long takes and vanity-free acting that recalls the audacity of Birdman.

While that allows for a grungy veracity, Becky is so relentlessly toxic that it’s hard to care for her spiral, or hope for her redemption. Yet that in itself is bracing to watch in a female-driven narrative – Dan Stevens’ weary ex and Eric Stoltz’s harried manager aside, this is a study of women: mates, mothers and lovers in all of their complexities.

While, like its protagonist,

Her Smell may wear thin and be prone to some bouts of grandiosity, it nevertheless leaves its mark – blooming like a bruise after the initial hit. That’s thanks to Moss’ committed centrifugal performance and an insistent, thrumming score that needles through every scene, as uncomfortably hypnotic as Becky herself. Jane Crowther

 ?? ?? TOLKIEN 12 OUT 26 AUG | VARIOUS
The LOTR author’s extraordinary life is crisply captured in an Easter egg-filled origin story. Early scenes of J.R.R. (Nicholas Hoult) romancing his future wife (Lily Collins) are a bit Downton, but the WW1 sequences swirl with invention.

?? ?? FEEDBACK TBC 26 AUG | DIGITAL HD After a beating from Brexiteers, radio host Eddie Marsan insists his show must go on – and soon regrets it. This single-location thriller is aided by Marsan’s intensity, but let down by a messy end, all shrieky showdowns and implausible twists.

 ?? ?? HELLBOY 15 OUT NOW | VARIOUS
Can’t fault the casting – David Harbour as H-boy, Ian McShane as Dad – but you can take issue with everything else in this hellish rehash. The only area it outdoes del Toro’s originals is in the amount of gratuitous gore sloshing about.

?? ?? MISSING LINK PG OUT NOW | VARIOUS
For all Hugh Jackman’s gusto, his globetrotting, Bigfoot-befriending adventurer is one of Laika’s less appealing protagonists. Yet charm prevails in the gorgeous settings and gentle tone, with an A-list antagonist lending some heft.

?? ?? HEAVY TRIP 15 OUT NOW | DIGITAL HD Following four Finnish misfits, this metalhead-com isn’t so much Spinal Tap redux as What We Do In The Shadows in Kiss make-up. Pace falters as satire gives way to slapstick, but there’s plenty of heart to go with all the reindeer blood.

 ?? ?? RAY & LIZ 15 OUT NOW | VARIOUS
Even as it recalls Terence Davies or Mike Leigh, Richard Billingham’s auto-biopic is a bracing portrait of parental neglect. Performances (Justin Salinger and Ella Smith as the gruesome twosome) are searingly spot-on.
