the new mutants

-

DIRECTOR Josh Boone STARRING Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Alice Braga, Charlie Heaton, Blu Hunt ETA 8 April 2020 TBC Josh Boone’s X-Men spinoff, about five young mutants being held in a secret facility as they discover their powers, finished shooting in 2017. Its release date was changed three times due to rumours of reshoots followed by the Disney-Fox merger, and then its April 2020 date was scuppered by the Covid-19 pandemic.

When we’ll finally get to see Boone’s horror-tinged movie is now anyone’s guess. According to Boone, the reshoots never happened (“If there hadn’t been a merger, I’m sure we would’ve done reshoots the same way every movie does pickups,” he recently told

Entertainment Weekly. “We didn’t even do that because by the time the merger was done and everything was settled, everybody’s older”), and Maisie Williams, who plays Rahne Sinclair aka the lycanthropic Wolfsbane, insists the movie that will finally get released is exactly the film that everybody set out to make.

Producer Simon Kinsberg promises a “very scary, edgy movie” (influences include The

Shining and A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors), and co-writer Knate Lee insists the postponements are a blessing, pointing out that the world is ready for an “intimate” and “claustrophobic” superhero movie after the all-out bombast of Avengers: Endgame.

GO BIG SCREEN Delays or not, the first Marvel horror movie is an event.
