When my agent said, ‘Giant worms underground,’ I was like, ‘Oh my God, my career is in the toilet,’” says Kevin Bacon of his casting in Tremors. A film about a Nevada town besieged by subterranean monsters doesn’t exactly scream box-office smash. And so it proved, with the 1990 horror-comedy dying a quick death on its cinema release.
But like any good movie monster, the film’s Graboids couldn’t be dispatched quite so easily. While this smart, funny and enthusiastic throwback to ’50s creature features didn’t capture the imagination of cinemagoers, it was a different story on video. There, the film found a level of popularity that has led to a TV series and six DTV sequels (the latest of which, Tremors: Shrieker Island, surfaced in November).
Now, three decades after it bombed at the BO, Tremors re-emerges as a bona fide Blu-ray blockbuster. Not content with a stunning new 4K restoration, this double-disc limited edition also serves up a wealth of extras including commentaries, interviews and documentaries packed with amusing behind-the-scenes anecdotes (“Somebody said, ‘This is not going to be a movie about giant dicks chasing people through the desert,’” recalls monster maker Alec Gillis about one particular challenge they faced). Plus three short films, most notably Tremors’ co-writer S.S. Wilson’s clever killer-celluloid flick Recorded Live.
