HAWAIIAN SHIRTS

Aloha attire…

-

ROMEO + JULIET

Baz Luhrmann transposed Shakespeare to Mexico for a heady, exotic take that sees Leonardo DiCaprio’s Romeo woo Claire Danes’ Juliet wearing a shirt as pretty as him. It’s so evocative of the film that the soundtrack sleeve was covered in the same print.

RAISING ARIZONA

Criminal Hi (Nic Cage) catches the eye of policewoman Ed (Holly Hunter) when she takes his mugshot. Why? Surely his snazzy tropical threads have something to do with the love that blossoms between an officer and a gentleman?

SCARFACE

Cuban coke kingpin Tony Montana loves a floral chemise, never more so than when he’s battling a chainsawwielding thug in a bathroom. Good job it’s a red one, which sorta lessens the blood splat. But not by much. He’ll need the Vanish for that...

THE GOONIES

Chunk (Jeff Cohen), the cuddly member of ’80s gang the Goonies, not only performs the unforgettable ‘truffle shuffle’ and keeps plot-driving chocolate bars in his pocket, but he’s unafraid to wear a lively pattern with checked trousers, too. Clashing, but make it fashion.

FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL

Heartbroken Peter (Jason Segel) regrets busting out the vacation wear when he runs into his ex and her new squeeze on holiday. “I wish I wasn’t wearing this fucking shirt…” To add insult to injury, the new boyf calls his top “colourful”. Mahalo.

OFFICE SPACE

Tedious boss Bill Lumbergh depresses his staff with extra work and enforced fun – including ‘Hawaiian Shirt Day’, when the team can “go ahead and wear Hawaiian shirts to work”, though we don’t actually see leisure wear in this salute to the horror of cubicle work.

FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH

Of course stoner student Spicoli (Sean Penn) doesn’t comply to sartorial rules for the high-school prom. Turning up in Vans and surfer shirt teamed with a dad tie, Spicoli gets up on stage to perform ‘Wooly Bully’ with the hired band. Dude!

ACE VENTURA: PET DETECTIVE

The wacky animal whisperer who literally talks out of his arse has a specific style – quiffed hair and an infinite wardrobe of jaunty shirts to telegraph that he’s certainly no 9-to-5 office man, and has unorthodox methods for solving crime.

BLUE HAWAII

How could this slight vehicle for Elvis Presley set in Hawaii not include the famous clothing of the islands? The king sports some eyewateringly short shorts and a red and mustard number to teach ‘gals’ to surf, as well as black and white creations. Rock-a-hula indeed.

RUNAWAY BRIDE

The pre-nuptial shindig for bolting bride Maggie (Julia Roberts) is a tropical street party… in chilly New England. Doesn’t look very fun, as she’s soon bundling a coat over her Hawaiian shirt and getting shouted at about eggs by Richard Gere. JC
