THE LAST AIRBENDER

In 2010, critics gave M. Night Shyamalan’s fantasy a ferocious rinsing. The problems started long before its 3D conversion and cuts…

-

Why it was a good idea (on paper)

When his own well of myths ran dry, M. Night Shyamalan visited someone else’s source for ideas for the first time. With a beloved animated TV universe and at least one awards-grade star (Dev Patel) on-hand, Shyamalan was equipped to bend his rep back into shape with a Rings-grade fantasy franchise.

What went wrong?

Dodging confusion with James Cameron’s sci-fi epic, Shyamalan lost the ‘Avatar’ from his title. More damagingly, he lost fans’ faith with accusations of whitewashing and a misjudged script. Heavy on exposition, low on humour, Shyamalan’s script creaked with the pressure of condensing S1 into one film. Cuts were made to ensure a rushed 3D conversion could be completed pre-release, which might explain some of the infodrops, though the low-powered performances and under-imagined elemental set-pieces hardly invite extended exposure. Even before everyone had a good laugh at the princess’ phallic hair, Shyamalan’s franchise hopes were squandered.

Redeeming feature

James Newton Howard’s swelling score dignifies even a low-grade Shyamalan cut, and the effects hold up. As for human elements, Patel’s tormented villain deserved a better film – and maybe Summer Bishil’s briefly glimpsed Princess Azula deserved a stronger sequel.

What happened next?

After toxic reviews and underwhelming box office, Shyamalan suffered another flop

(After Earth) before sort-of regaining his footing with TV’s Wayward Pines and lower-budget films. He later defended Airbender, claiming critics misunderstood its child’s POV. Audiences saw through this much clearly: 3D in post wouldn’t last.

Should it be remade?

A live-action Netflix series is planned, though show creators Michael Dante DiMartino/Bryan Konietzko have split, citing ‘creative differences’. The duo are now developing an animated film and more at Nickelodeon’s Avatar Studios. Be assured: Shyamalan’s

Airbender won’t be the last. KH
