SUPERPOWER STRUGGLE

-

Thank God - I thought it was just me! I was so pleased to read the letter from K. Weston in the August issue regarding your obsession with comic-book movies. I’ve been a reader of TF for many years (thank you for the good times); I used to read the mag from cover to cover but now, with so many pages dedicated to superheroes, I skip a whole bunch of pages. But keep up the good work on the rest of it.

DAVE GANGE, BRISTOL

KWeston’s letter really was the last straw. I understand superheroes might not be to everyone’s taste, but I’m fed up with arthouse cinema fans blaming popular movies for the lack of ‘worthy’ releases at multiplexes. Typically between Oct-Jan there are dozens of Oscar-friendly movies, which vastly outnumber the superhero films released during the year. The way the release calendar works is that fans of comic-book fare are left with nothing for several months each year, just as fans of more serious films are. We’re all fans of the magic of cinema, so let’s try to get along rather than blaming each other for a problem we both share.

TIM DICKSON, MILTON KEYNES

Whoa, this is like Captain America: Civil War, where you’ve got good guys vs. other good guys and - sorry, someone was saying something about us being really focused on comic-book movies? Sure, there are a lot of super-flicks, but the genre’s getting broader, deeper and more inclusive every day - see the feature on Shang‑Chi, p56-61 (go on, Dave - a lot of work went in). And thanks to Zack Snyder, there’s even the choice of re-watching a movie that’s the same but completely different.
