THE LAST BUS TBC
OUT 27 AUGUST CINEMAS
Timothy Spall ages up to play Tom, an ailing pensioner who journeys 838 miles from John o’ Groats to Land’s End, relying on just his bus pass and the kindness of strangers. Spall is, as you would expect, wholly credible throughout his journey, and the dignified finale of Gillies MacKinnon’s (Hideous Kinky) latest is quietly moving. But the stops along the way – taking in friendly Ukrainians, lairy hen parties and mean ticket inspectors, all as Tom becomes an unsuspecting social-media hit – are groan-worthy. Maybe wait for the next bus. James Mottram
