Directed by A-lister Tony Scott, written by new kid Tarantino, True Romance marked a tidal shift in 1990s’ Hollywood. It looks like another of the era’s glibly violent action comedies, but it feels different, with barely any plot but dialogue to die for. Pulp Fiction would perfect the mix, but the prototype remains a blast. Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette spend as much time watching movies as dodging bullets, while an extraordinary supporting cast (MVPs: Walken and Hopper) wolf down the scenery. Simon Kinnear
