Sometimes, gold lies in filmmakers’ flops. Consider David Lynch, who met with the kinds of negative responses usually reserved for people who steal kids’ sweets over two ‘misfires’. Yet even if Dune and the Twin Peaks movie are lower-tier Lynch, they carry enough weight to thrill or, in Dune’s case, at least hint at could-have-beens.

Even if rampant exposition hardly helped Frank Herbert newbies find their bearings, Dune remains flawed evidence of Lynch’s untameable vision. Depraved barons, baroque designs and industrial drones resemble Eraserhead or Blue Velvet made cosmically unsettling. Forced to streamline the tale of Paul Atreides (Kyle MacLachlan) and his destiny, Lynch struggled. But give the director a queasy foetus scene and he’s right at home.

Cannes, yet it holds tremendous power as a tragedy of youth violently destroyed, a dark journey of the psyche played to perfection by Sheryl Lee; where we previously knew Laura Palmer as a corpse, here she blazes with life. Even if some elements don’t add up to a whole hill of beans - David Bowie’s cameo bewilders long before he became a kettle in the 2017 series - Fire’s psycho-horror stylings pack a triple-espresso kick. Most filmmakers would kill for a failure so deep, dark and strong. Kevin Harley
