The prospect of eye surgery to remove a cataract and prevent macular degeneration inspired filmmaker Mark Cousins to embark on this typically idiosyncratic and digressive meditation on the role of looking in our lives. Restricted by Covid-enforced lockdown conditions, the writer/director draws on images he has personally shot from around the world over several decades, together with clips from countless films and stills of paintings, to illustrate powerful and sometimes rapturous feelings which are elicited through the simple act of observation.
