The first ever Tunisian film to be Oscar-nominated, Kaouther Ben Hania’s provocative drama comes inspired by a real-life art project, when Belgian artist Wim Delvoye tattooed his subject’s back and exhibited/sold the work. Ben Hania takes that idea as the springboard for the tale of a wealthy painter (Koen De Bouw) who convinces a Syrian refugee (Yahya Mahayni) to become his canvas. So begins an intriguing work about politics, freedom and the price of art, rendered with bold cinematic brushstrokes.
