DARK MATTER
BOOK
MICHAEL WINTERBOTTOM | BLOOMSBURY/BFI
Seeking to understand the obstacles that even notable names face trying to finance a British film these days, Winterbottom uses the first Covid lockdown to interview an enviable list of directors, including Steve McQueen, Lynne Ramsay and Mike Leigh. The collage of Q&As can feel unstructured, but there’s fascinating candour (Edgar Wright on Ant-Man, James Marsh calling Man On Wire “the only film I’ve made that I actually like”). Eye-opening and addictively readable.
