What makes a Ghostbusters ghost? Jason Reitman explains

-

“The trickiest thing is to really figure out the classification of ghosts. If you look at the original, you have the library ghost, which is a floating humanoid ghost, and then you have Slimer, who they describe as a free-floating vapour. He’s a spuddy kind of ghost, and something that you could imagine being originally designed out of clay. There are Terror Dogs, that were reptilian ghosts. You have Gozer, who’s a god. You have the taxi cab ghost, who was a zombie. And then you have the ghost who comes up in the subway, which is this neon batwing ghost, right? And then you have the screaming ones that come out of the building. And obviously the Marshmallow Man. “So if you looked at the silhouettes of those, it would be almost impossible to understand: ‘Alright, what connects these ghosts to one universe?’ But there’s something about them, when you look at them, where you just know: ‘Alright, that’s a Ghostbusters ghost.’ We spent literally years trying to figure out what makes a Ghostbusters ghost, while designing our own characters, our Miner ghosts, and Muncher, and then bringing Bug-Eye to life from the little toys. It’s just constant conversations about ‘What makes them Ghostbusters ghosts?’” JF
